A note from Jai

"I was seven and a half when I lost. Not just any chess match — my final game at my first Singapore National Chess Competition, in March 2024. I froze. I remember thinking I was the worst kid who had ever played chess."

Like losing meant something was permanently wrong with me...

Two years. One kitchen table.
A chess loss that started it all.

Every copy does something real.

"The fight to live, begins with a place to live." — St. Jude India ChildCare Centres

Since 2022, my family has built a home for children with cancer at St Jude India — 8 units in 2023, 8 more across two cities in 2024, 10 more in 2025 (22 children housed), and now this book in 2026. Those 22 children live in units named after me and my sister, Jia.

The human moment

This summer in Mumbai, traffic blocked the road to the centre — so Jia and I met the children over video instead, saw the units that carry our names, and used our own savings to treat everyone to a snack. ₹8,100 (~SGD 107), paid out of pocket.

Even the snack came with a promise.

"One day, I want to play for those kids. Me on drums. Jia on guitar. The JJ Band. Our first real gig. That's the mission after this one."

— Jai, age 10

The ask

For this Kickstarter, I'm personally giving SGD 5 from every copy sold to St Jude India — on top of everything above. After this, I want to know what other charities we can support together.

Be First

This campaign isn't asking you to take a chance on a book.
It's asking you to take a chance on a 10-year-old who already did the hard part.

Young Author Program

SGD 349 Early Bird · Reg SGD 399

A guided program for children to write, illustrate and publish their own affirmation book — using AI tools, with parental guidance built in at every step. Exactly how Jai made this one.

Claude + Canva AI · Ages 7–14 · Parents involved throughout

Why Kickstarter?

"A publisher puts their name on it.
Then the most important sentence disappears."

The most important sentence in this story is: a 10-year-old self-published this. That sentence is the whole point. The moment a publisher gets involved, it's gone.

Kickstarter lets us print only when there's real demand. If we hit SGD 2,500, we print. If we don't, you pay nothing. Jai and Jia stay the authors.

Things parents usually ask.

Who is this book for? +

Children aged 7–13. The affirmations and illustrated fables are written to be read independently from age 7. The reflection activities and spy missions grow with the child — a 7-year-old and a 13-year-old will both find something useful, but they'll use it differently.

Did AI write this book? +

Honestly: AI wrote most of the first drafts. Jai directed every word, rejected what didn't feel right, and approved what stayed. The result is a book that sounds like a child because a child was in charge of every decision. The AI was the tool. Jai was the author. Curious how a 10-year-old directed an AI to write a whole book? See how he did it →

Can I personalise it for a specific child? +

Yes — Tiers 3 and 4 include personalisation. Tell us the child's name when you complete your backer survey after the campaign closes, and Jai and Jia will write it inside the cover by hand.

What if you don't hit your goal? +

Kickstarter is all-or-nothing. If we don't reach SGD 2,500 by the deadline, no one is charged and the campaign closes. We'd regroup, adjust, and likely relaunch. But we don't expect to need to.

When will books ship? +

6–8 weeks after the campaign closes. We will send tracking information to every backer. For schools ordering 10+ copies, email [email protected] and we'll arrange it directly.
